The rally is being organized in response to the State exploring disposal of nearly 3,000 acres of the Elliott State Forest after a successful legal challenge by conservation organizations which thwarted clearcutting in imperiled marbled murrelet habitat on the 93,000-acre forest. If the parcels are sold to Big Timber, it could have drastic effects on clean water, wild salmon and recreation, and it could also set a horrible precedent for the rest of the Elliott and other coastal state forests, like the Clatsop and Tillamook. Conservation organization are encouraging that the unique wildlands and waters in question be retained in public ownership or purchased privately for conservation.
