On December 10 at 9:30 am, citizens from across western Oregon will descend on the State Land Board meeting in Salem (775 Summer St. NE) and hold a rally encouraging Governor John Kitzhaber, Secretary of State Kate Brown, and Treasurer Ted Wheeler to protect critical forestlands on the Elliott State Forest that are being considered for disposal. Speakers will discuss the pressing issues facing our coastal state forests, and members of the Brazilian-inspired percussion group, Samba Ja, will be on hand creating infectious musical rhythms. Rallygoers are encouraged to present oral testimony to the State Land Board, bring signs and make noise about the dire need to safeguard the at-risk primary rainforest on the Elliott.

The rally is being organized in response to the State exploring disposal of nearly 3,000 acres of the Elliott State Forest after a successful legal challenge by conservation organizations which thwarted clearcutting in imperiled marbled murrelet habitat on the 93,000-acre forest. If the parcels are sold to Big Timber, it could have drastic effects on clean water, wild salmon and recreation, and it could also set a horrible precedent for the rest of the Elliott and other coastal state forests, like the Clatsop and Tillamook. Conservation organization are encouraging that the unique wildlands and waters in question be retained in public ownership or purchased privately for conservation.

Buses and carpools to the Salem rally are being organized from Roseburg, Eugene and Portland. Contact Francis Eatherington, francis@cascwild.org; 541.643.1309 if you’d like to carpool from Roseburg. A bus will leave Eugene at 8 am sharp from the parking lot behind FedEx Office at 13th and Willamette St. Contact Josh Laughlin, jlaughlin@cascwild.org; 541.434.1463 for more info. A bus will leave Portland from the southwest corner of Holladay Park at NE 11th and Holladay St. at 8 am sharp. Contact Micah Meskel, mmeskel@audubonportland.org; 971 222-6128 for more info. Rallygoers are encouraged to bring signs and banners and to testify at the meeting during the public comment opportunity. A sign/banner/costume making event will take place at the Cascadia Wildlands office (1247 Willamette St.) from 6-9 pm on Monday, Dec. 9. Artists and aspiring artists encouraged to attend.
